In the past, replacing scratched, clouded or yellowed plastic headlight covers was an expensive necessity in order to preserve safety. But now with the 3M Headlight Lens Restoration System, car and motorcycle owners can shine and restore plastic lenses — including headlights, tail lights, fog and directional lights — to like-new condition for a fraction of the cost. This kit includes everything needed to restore two headlight lenses, excluding the user-supplied household drill (1200-1600 rpm), automotive tape, clean cloth, and spray bottle.

    Clouded Plastic Headlights

Plastic surfaces are great for giving vehicles lightweight, durable components – from plastic headlight lenses to motorcycle windshields, plastic tail lights, trailers and more. But these plastic components can yellow and haze with weather, sun and sand, limiting visibility and diminishing the appearance and value of the vehicle. While the impact on a vehicle's value varies, the dangers in terms of limited visibility are clear: It is a factor in 2.8 million accidents, 23,000 fatal crashes and 2,300 pedestrian deaths each year, according to the Motor Vehicle Lighting Council. Dim headlight bulbs and hazy plastic headlight lenses or surfaces may lead to this reduced visibility, putting you, your passengers and other cars at risk. The AAIA Car Care Council found that 26 percent of the cars it inspected had issues with their lighting system. Millions of cars on the road today have plastic headlight lenses. The problem increases with the age of the lens, and with the average age of cars on the road about 10 years old, the problem is growing. Yet there is something you can do about it.

    The Do-It-Yourself Solution

The 3M Headlight Lens Restoration System is designed to give do-it-yourselfers an easy and affordable way to repair their vehicle's plastic lens surfaces. Containing various graded sanding pads, pad holders, buffing pads, polish and detailed instructions, it includes everything users need to turn their household drill into a low cost solution to this dangerous automotive problem. The Lens Renewal Kit can also be used to repair hazing on other plastic surfaces, including taillights, emergency light bars, plastic motorcycle lights, trailers, snowmobiles and more. Compared to having headlight lenses commercially repaired for approximately $75-$150 or replaced for up to $1,500, the 3M Headlight Lens Restoration System costs a fraction of that price, and the entire process takes under an hour, depending on the extent of the damage.

    How Does it Work?

The steps for using the 3M Headlight Lens Restoration System are as easy as 1-2-3. First, sand the hazed surface in a two-stage wet sanding process with the enclosed sanding pads until the surface is smooth and the dulled layer is removed. Then polish with the 3M plastic polish, and buff with the buffing pad to the level of clarity desired in the plastic. In addition to a standard household drill mentioned (1200-1600 rpm) used in the buffing process, you will also need 3M Automotive Masking Tape to protect the body panels of your car surrounding the work area, and a spray bottle and water used in the wet sanding process. Otherwise, everything that you need is included in the kit.

I used it on my Acura MDX; it's 100% better than what it was. The light seems to be dull a bit now that the yellow fog is gone. That's most likely my fault as I didn't sand enough. I am going to give it another try as I have additional pads left over. No complains with the product. Just take your time doing this; don't rush it.

My lenses are on a 1997 VW Passat that has spent its entire life outdoors; much of it in Florida sun. The lenses appeared to have been covered with tent canvas before I began. An hour later, and they looked better than showroom, glistening like diamonds. Following the directions to a T, I gave each grade of paper additional work time as the instructions encourage (don't rush it!), which really gave it a terrific final result.

Letter perfect.

I purchased the kit at Wal-Mart. I've visited three major aftermarket automotive supply stores, Advance, Autozone, and O'Reily's. None of the three stores carry the refill kit. It's a big pain to not have refills easily available.

Let start by saying I spend the winter months in Florida, so yellow headlights goes with territory. I have a 2002 Saturn which had the yellow lights. Simple 1/2 hour and it is gone the lenses are clear like new. Nothing else to say it works and is easy and reasonable price! EXCELLENT product.

Excellent video instruction on product homepage. The sanding process worked well - took more time than I had anticipated (90 min.) to produce an excellent outcome - but definitely worth it. I am not convinced that the rubbing compound application is really necessary if the sanding is done properly and thoroughly ...

I just used the product for the first time and I was highly impressed. The U-tube video was great at showing how to properly use the product as well as how simple it was. The whole process took about an hour for both headlights and that was only because I took my time to make sure I did a good job. A safe and effective product for any do-it-yourself person. Highly recommended!!!

Finally! ... a product that does exactly as advertised. This kit does a superb job of restoring automotive headlight lenses! And the directions for how to use the product were excellent; well-written, clear, concise ... yet detailed enough to get the job done. The lenses on my car were so cloudy that I thought they were completely beyond repair. I was truly amazed at what I was able to do using this kit. It was worth every penny! Good job, 3M!

This kit works well thumbs up on this product

Good product for the price. However, this Lens Restoration project took more time than I thought it would. Also, the kit should include additional P500 and P800 Sanding Pads or the pads should be available for purchase in the store.

This is a good product. However, the product can be improved by adding additional P500 and P800 sanding dic pads or make the pads available for purchase. Not enough pads in kit to completely sand down one lens on 2000 Ford Focus.

Product worked awsome. Headlight looked like a piece of cardboard and came out clear and like new.

Bought this today for my sons 1997 toyota. Very yellow headlight lens.. Gave it to him and came back shortly. Wow! Lens are clear and a dad feels comfortable with his son driving at night. Incidentally, you might consider their forced air filters, always used them. Probably a reason I bought 3Ms lens cleaner. No, I don't work for 3M.. Simply used to their quality.

Like others I was skeptical the whole time I was in line waiting to buy this product.. As a matter of fact I actually put the product back on two other occasions because I was just that skeptical of trying something with such promising results. Well now I will say "shame on me". This is a product that truly lives up to its Name and Claim to Perform as advertised. No I'm not a paid review that other big compannies use. I'm just an average guy from a little country town in Piedmont, Missouri. My only regret is not taking a before and after picture. I used this product on the original headlights of a '99 Nissan Altima that were very yellow and impossible to get any desent night vision without using the high beams. Now with crystal clear lenses I get that type of vision on low beams. OK this is how I will end my comment and review. AAAWWWEEESSSOOOMMMEEE!!!

Absolutely fantastic! Took maybe an hour for both headlights. Makes the lenses look brand new. I really didn't have that big of an expectation (I've used other products), but this really is a great product. Really makes my car look good again. Thanks 3M!!

Two 14 year old and severely yellowed headlights now look brand new. I'm amazed. Only took an hour, and enough product left over to do more. The instructions recommend lots of sanding in steps 1 and 2. Doing this will greatly increase the results of step 3, and along with lots of water, this will lengthen the life of the Trizact pad. Thanks 3M.

Very simple to use and only took 15-20 minutes!

My son was driving with his brights on and no one ever flashed him. His headlights were horrible. His co-worker recommended it because he had used it on his own and the results were terrific. We bought one and still were a little unsure that it would even work because the headlights were that bad. We opened the packaged and pulled out the directions. The directions were excellent and easy to follow and we couldn't have asked for better results - even a girl can do it. ;)

Great results - I highly recommend this product. I took me about an hour all together on a 10 year old headlight. It was very faded. I paid $59 at Jiffy Lube and the results were faded within a year. I followed the directions and kept sanding. It was not until the purple pad and the rubbing compound that the headlight popped out as perfectly clear again. I used the whole kit on one headlight, but mine was pretty badly faded.

Don't waste your money on "as seen on TV" nonsense. You have to work a bit on this one, but the science makes sense and the results are great.

Worked great on first headlight. Not as good on second. I believe my problem is the Trizact pad clogs up and won't produce a good slurry.
Plenty of compound for 2 PT Cruiser headlights.

I have a 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee that had badly clouded and yellowed head light lenses. The 3M kit worked great, now they look new again and add value as a trade in or selling the car outright. In the past, I tried many headlight restoration products that simply did not work. Kudos to 3M for developing such a great system.

best thing ever for headlamp restoration !!!!!!

The product worked very well. It was a little scary at first when you start sanding the headlight and it appears you are ruining the light, but the end result was very good.

This kit is amazing! It was quick, and fun, and the results are amazing. I can see much better now when driving at night.
