Due to recent environmental regulations and an increase in environmental concerns, waterborne basecoats are quickly becoming the preferred alternative to solvent-based basecoats. Easier to use and less impactful on the environment, these basecoats offer significant advantages and benefits which 3M can help you to maximize.

In waterborne basecoats, the amount of volatile organic solvent is reduced and replaced by de-ionized water. The biggest benefit of this is a considerable reduction in VOC emissions, but these paints also feature improved coverage, improved color blending and shorter process time. With advances in waterborne technology these coatings have been engineered to provide the highest quality finish for all paint types including metallics, pearls and solid colors.


Waterborne Procedures and Tips

Seam Sealers and Coatings

Waterborne basecoats have not resulted in any process changes using 3M™ Seam Sealers and Coatings. It is best to apply sealer over 3M seam sealers and coatings prior to the application of waterborne basecoats. For best results, make sure all bare metal is primed before applying waterborne basecoats.


Gun Cleaning

3M Recommended Procedure:
• Remove the 3M™ PPS™ container from the spray gun
• Flush a small amount of cleaning solution through the channel of the gun
• Follow the paint manufacturer’s recommendations for cleaning the gun


3M™ PPS™ Cups

3M Recommended Procedure:
• Thread the correct adapter to spray gun in order to convert it to the 3M™ PPS™ system
• Choose the appropriate 3M™ PPS™ cup part number based on paint company recommended filter size (either 125 micron or 200 micron)
• Select the size of the 3M™ PPS™ cup (mini, standard or large) based on the size of repair and the amount of paint which needs to be mixed
• Place a 3M™ PPS™ liner into hard cup and add the waterborne basecoat toners directly into the liner
• Use paint company recommended procedure for mixing contents.
• Snap the 3M™ PPS™ lid (with built in filter) into the 3M™ PPS™ cup/liner
• Invert the spray gun and attach it to the 3M™ PPS™ assembly with a quick quarter turn


Application Tips:

  • It is not required to evacuate or purge the remaining air in the cup prior to spraying a gravity fed system
  • In the event you need to spray upside down, with the air line connected, invert the gun and pull the trigger fully to bleed the remaining air from the liner. The spray gun can now spray at any angle, even upside down.
  • Air can be re-introduced into the liner at any time by simply disconnecting the air line, inverting the gun and pulling the trigger fully in order to allow air back into the liner

The 3M™ PPS™ system provides a number of advantages when spraying with waterborne materials:

  • Helps eliminate corrosion by eliminating traditional metal cups
  • Helps reduce cleaning time
  • Helps reduce the amount of paint and solvent used and also reduces water waste generated
  • Provides in-line filtering
  • Achieves the same spray characteristics as traditional spray guns with metal cups

3M™ SUN GUN™ Color Matching Light

3M Recommended Procedure:

  • Make sure pre-paint defects such as coarse sand scratches and pinholes are removed
  • Choose the correct color variant or alternate color chip
  • Ensure proper color match
  • Make sure there is complete coverage
  • Verify blends and metallic layout for outside appearance
  • Identify post-paint defects such as swirl marks, burn through and sand scratches which occur in the paint finishing process

Application Tips:

  • Build a color library using test panels and spray out cards
  • As waterborne basecoats dry, they’re more susceptible to a change in color
  • Be sure to check the test panel once the basecoat is cleared and completely dry
  • Waterborne basecoats cover very well, therefore it may mislead the technician into thinking they’ve achieved full coverage so, determining the number of coats needed will be very important to obtain a blendable match
  • NOTE: different colors may require more coats
