After running out of 3M General Purpose Adhesive Cleaner (# 08987) in the red and white can, I could no longer locate it in California. I loved it and used it on my headlights, bumpers and painted car surfaces. I then picked up 3M Adhesive Remover (# 03618). I proceeded to use it in the same manner and sprayed it on my 2005 911 Carrera S Fog Lights/Turn Indicator. Immediately, the #03618 3M Adhesive Remover ETCHED MY FOG LIGHTS/TURN INDICATOR, leaving a rough white surface. Nowhere on the can does it say that it should not be used on automotive head lights or fog lights or acrylic plastics. I was spraying the entire front surface my 911, one section at a time, to remove the glue residue after removing an old vinyl clear bra.
My fog light/turn indicator appeared permanently damaged. I try plastic polish by hand without any improvement. I the was finally able to restore the light to 90% clarity after sanding it down for two hours using the 3M Lens Renewal Kit the Protection (# 39045), which cost $30.
This accounted for a lot of extra stress, time wasted and some residual damage to my fog light. The website states,
"3M™ Adhesive Remover quickly removes wax, grease, oil and adhesive residue. It will not harm most cured automotive paints and is also suitable for vinyl and glass surfaces."
This product (03618) was also inferior to the one I originally used (#08978) in removing the old residual glue and road tar. However, I do not believe it is available in California any longer.
